Sotogrande was originally a golf resort. It was established in the 1960s by Joseph McMicking, a wealthy American. His eighteen-hole parkland course was designed by the talented golf architect, Robert Trent Jones. The landscape of Sotogrande is perfect for golf. There are hills, valleys, the River Guardiaro and amazing views of the Mediterranean Sea. Real Club Valderrama is regarded as the best golf course in Spain. It was chosen as the venue for the 1997 Ryder Cup. You can now try your golfing skills at even more Sotogrande courses including La Reserva and Almenara.

The main beach at Sotogrande has incredible views of the Spanish coast and even North Africa. At the nearby village of Torreguadiaro there is a popular beach with dark, soft sand. However, the most amazing beach is nowhere near the sea. At La Reserva Golf resort, there is an artificial lagoon with its own beach. It's a beautiful location where you can relax on the sand and admire the surrounding hills.

Dolphin and Whale Watching

One of the most exciting activities is to watch for whales in the Mediterranean Sea. You can join a pleasure cruise from Sotogrande which will take you nearer to the Straits of Gibraltar. It is the place where whales frequently move between the Mediterranean and the Atlantic Ocean. You might even see a large orca and many dolphins.
